This expedition takes you to Mgahinga Gorilla park in Uganda for a Golden monkey habituation experience. Mgahinga gorilla park sits on the Uganda-Rwanda border. It’s one of the few locations offering Golden monkey trekking, alongside Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga National park in DR Congo. However, this park provides an additional adventure: Golden Monkey habituation experience. Golden monkeys are considered endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), with only about 4000 individuals remaining in the wild.
About Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys are named for their golden fur, making them among the most visually striking animal species. They’re smaller than Gorillas and Chimpanzees, but less timid than their relatives. Curious by nature, they move swiftly both on the ground and in trees. They primarily inhabit the Bamboo sections of the forest, feeding on bamboo itself. Their diet also includes fruits and potatoes, and they occasionally venture into local farms for food.

Day 1: Drive to Mgahinga National Park
The 3 Days Golden monkey Trekking in Uganda begins today. After an early breakfast, our driver guide will collect you from your hotel or preferred location to start the 10-hour journey to southwestern Uganda. You’ll stop at the EQUATOR for a Northern and Southern hemisphere experience, where you can also enjoy a cup of Coffee or Tea.
Resuming the journey, the next stop is Mbarara, known for Long horned cattle and as Uganda’s milk production center. We’ll have lunch here before continuing to Mgahinga Gorilla park in Kisoro (Kigezi) for our Golden monkey habituation experience. Upon arrival, we’ll check into our lodge, have dinner, and rest for tomorrow’s trek.
Day 2: Golden Monkey Habituation and Trekking day
Today features the highlight of our Mgahinga Gorilla park trip: the “Golden monkey Habituation Experience”. After an early breakfast, our driver guide will take you to the park offices for briefing and group assignment. Each group, led by a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger guide, will enter the forest. Golden monkey trekking is less demanding than Gorilla or Chimpanzee tracking.
The forest journey is quite adventurous, offering a true jungle experience with nature’s sights and sounds. It’s also excellent for birdwatching due to the forest’s diverse avian population. Once you locate the Golden monkeys, you’ll spend the rest of the day observing these clever and beautiful primates. Photography with flash is allowed.
Afterward, you’ll return to the park offices, and our driver will take you back to your lodge, having experienced a unique Golden monkey encounter.
Golden monkey habituation lasts 4 hours
Golden monkey habituation Permit costs $100
Day 3: Return to Kampala
After breakfast, we check out and head back to Kampala/Entebbe.
