Nile fishing at Murchison Falls costs between $50 and $100 per person for a half-day session, including a licensed guide, all equipment, and a fishing vessel. The fishing takes place below the falls in the stretch of the Victoria Nile between the base of the falls and the river delta. This section holds one of the highest densities of Nile perch in Uganda, with individual fish regularly exceeding 50 kg and occasional catches reported above 100 kg. Tiger fish are also present and provide a very different fishing experience โ fast, aggressive strikes and strong runs.
Sport fishing at Murchison is catch-and-release for Nile perch over 1 metre in length. Smaller fish may be retained for consumption. The lodge kitchen at Paraa Safari Lodge will cook the day’s catch. UWA requires a fishing permit, which your operator will arrange as part of the package. Independent fishing is not permitted in the park.
Nile Perch Fishing
The Nile perch (Lates niloticus) is the target species for most anglers at Murchison. The fish are present throughout the year, though they feed most actively during the cooler months of June to September. Trolling with large lures at 3 to 5 knots produces consistent strikes. Perch in the 10 to 30 kg range are the most common catch. Fish over 60 kg are caught several times a season. The pool at the base of the falls, where the water is deeply oxygenated and food sources concentrate, is particularly productive. Fishing within 500 metres of the base of the falls requires a UWA boat permit in addition to the fishing permit.
Tiger Fish
The tiger fish (Hydrocynus vittatus) is found in the faster-flowing sections of the Nile below the falls. It is smaller than the Nile perch โ typical catches run 1 to 4 kg โ but fights hard relative to its size. Tiger fish take artificial lures readily, particularly silver spoons and poppers fished on the surface near rock features. The fish are aggressive biters and provide excellent sport on lighter tackle. Anglers who have fished barramundi or tarpon find the tiger fish behaviour similar. They are regarded as one of the better eating freshwater fish in Uganda when prepared fresh.
Equipment and What to Expect
All necessary equipment including rods, reels, lures, and bait is provided by licensed operators. Personal tackle is welcome if you prefer your own gear. Gloves are advisable when handling Nile perch โ the scales along the gill covers are sharp. A long-nose pliers or dehooker is necessary for tiger fish, which have very sharp teeth. Most half-day sessions produce multiple strikes. A guide with no catch on a given morning is uncommon but does occur if fish are not actively feeding. The Nile below the falls is also an excellent location for wildlife photography between strikes โ hippos, crocodiles, and shoebill storks are frequently visible from the fishing boat.
