🚢 Nile Boat Cruise to Murchison Falls

⏱ 3–4 hours 💰 $40–$60 per person 📍 Victoria Nile, Paraa 👥 All levels

The Nile boat cruise at Murchison Falls runs from Paraa to the base of the falls along the Victoria Nile and costs $40 to $60 per person, depending on the operator and whether a private or shared boat is used. The cruise covers roughly 17 km of river, taking 2 to 3 hours each way, and returns the same route. It is the most-booked activity in the park and the most reliable way to see large wildlife concentrations without a game drive vehicle.

The Victoria Nile between Paraa and the falls hosts one of the highest concentrations of Nile crocodiles and hippos anywhere in Africa. Uganda Wildlife Authority estimates over 5,000 hippos in the Murchison section of the river. Crocodiles reach considerable size here — individuals exceeding 5 metres are regularly photographed from the boats. The density of birdlife along the riverbanks is exceptional, with the African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, goliath heron, and shoebill stork all regularly recorded within this corridor.

The cruise ends at the base of the falls, where the entire Nile drops 43 metres through a 7-metre gap in the rock. A permanent rainbow forms in the mist rising from the plunge pool. Most boats stop here for 15 to 20 minutes before returning to Paraa. The return journey offers different sightings as the light shifts and animals move to the bank in the late afternoon.

What to Expect on the Boat

Most cruise boats carry 10 to 30 passengers. Operators use flat-bottomed aluminium boats or small fibreglass vessels. Larger operators such as Paraa Safari Lodge run their own boats; UWA also operates shared boats from the jetty. The boat moves slowly, allowing photographers to work from both sides. A UWA guide accompanies each trip and provides commentary on wildlife and the falls. There is typically a short briefing before departure on safety and what to expect. Binoculars are useful but not essential — hippos and crocodiles are often within 20 to 30 metres of the boat. Bring sunscreen and a hat as there is no shade on the water between 10:00 and 14:00.

Wildlife You Are Likely to See

Hippos are present throughout the entire route and visible at every point along the cruise. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon — the 08:00 departure is the better choice for seeing them out of the water. Nile crocodiles bask on exposed sandbars and mudflats throughout the day. Elephants come to drink at the river, particularly in the dry season from June to September. Buffalo regularly cross the Nile near Paraa. Water monitor lizards are common on fallen logs close to the bank. Bird sightings on a single cruise routinely exceed 30 species, with the shoebill stork found at the delta marshes near the start of the cruise.

Practical Tips for the Cruise

Book your cruise slot at Paraa gate, through your lodge, or directly with UWA. The 08:00 morning departure gives better light for photography and cooler temperatures. The 14:00 afternoon departure ends at the falls around 17:00 in good golden light. Both slots are worthwhile. Wear light clothing and carry water — the river is hot during the day. The boat ride itself is smooth with minimal wave action. Motion sickness is not a common issue. A wide-angle lens and a telephoto of 300 mm or more will cover most wildlife photography needs from the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine the boat cruise with the falls hike?

Yes. The standard combination is the morning boat cruise, then a short drive to the top of the falls viewpoint. Most tour operators include both in a single day itinerary.

Is the boat cruise suitable for children?

The cruise is suitable for children of all ages. The boat is stable and the wildlife encounters are low-adrenaline. Children find the hippos and crocodiles particularly engaging.

Do I need to book in advance?

During peak season (July–September), advance booking is advisable. Outside peak season, walk-in bookings at the jetty are usually available on the day.
